Dr. James McCune Smith is probably best known as the first African American to hold a university degree in medicine. It should not be forgotten that he was a tireless writer, a leader in the abolition movement, a community organizer involved in African American education, orphanages, and healthcare. And all of this before the Civil War and the Emancipation and Abolition of Slavery.
