Dr. James McCune Smith is probably best known as the first African American to hold a university degree in medicine. It should not be forgotten that he was a tireless writer, a leader in the abolition movement, a community organizer involved in African American education, orphanages, and healthcare. And all of this before the Civil War and the Emancipation and Abolition of Slavery.

We hope this website will help to make Dr. James McCune Smith real for you and provide solid source information for your own interest or school reports during Black History Month.
